Does DHA Boost Kid's Brains?
Welcome to another Health News video news release brought to you by Dave Johnston of Today's Health and Fitness.
In today’s news we look at whether or not DHA supplements make babies smarter?
When checking out baby formulas and options for prenatal nutritional supplements, you’ll find nearly all of the products advertise a “brain boosting” omega-3 fatty acid called DHA.
After nearly 20 years of research, it’s still not clear that DHA in formula improves brain health in babies, or that mothers need to take DHA supplements.
Studies published by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded there was no clear evidence that formula supplemented with DHA, a nutrient found mainly in fish and fish oil, improves infant brain development. At the same time, it found no harm from adding the nutrient.
Still, many experts believe there is value in including DHA in formula. Dr. Steven Abrams, a professor of pediatrics at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin states that it’s hard to prove developmental outcomes and feels it makes sense to use it.
During pregnancy and the first few years of life, DHA accumulates in the brain and retina of the eye and plays an important role in neural and vision development. Breast milk also contains DHA in varying concentrations, depending on how much is in the mother’s diet.
Studies from the 1990’s found formula-fed infants had lower levels of brain DHA than breast-fed infants and recommended adding DHA to formula to improve cognitive and vision development.
Today, all major formula brands sold contain DHA, usually in the form of a purified oil derived from algae, an ingredient adding to the cost of formula.
Many women don’t seem to be getting enough DHA. Women of childbearing age consume an average of 60 milligrams of DHA per day, with a daily recommendation of at least 200 milligrams during pregnancy and breast-feeding. That same amount of DHA can be obtained by eating eight to 12 ounces of fish high in omega-3s and low in methyl mercury, like salmon, trout, herring and anchovies.
The best thing you can do is eat a balanced, healthy diet, which should include a high quality omega-3 fish weekly. And when introducing food to your child, include some fish in their diet.
